I think every American should go and see the Grand Canyon once in their lifetimes. It is definitely the most awe-inspiring thing I have ever put my eyes on. Since visiting in early 2010, I have thought often about the strength and force of the Colorado River helping to form the land feature over millions of years. The idea of consistent energy over long periods of time is something I try to embody in my own endeavors.
Whether writing, trying to get stronger, trying to become a better martial artist, investing, YouTubing… I’m realizing more and more that seeing extraordinary results is often the result of the same consistent actions for extraordinary periods of time. I’m trying to be like the river in the sense that I give off continuous unwavering energy towards a task. I am working to be undeterred by boredom, stagnation, or monotony. I am focusing on continuing to show up and get the words written and get the videos shot… get the workout done… get the money saved from every paycheck.
When I first started learning to box at the MMA gym I attend, it was so tempting to believe that there were these secret drills out there that would help me gain hand speed. One day I realized the speed came from slowing down and getting good repetitions. Consistently getting good reps and letting time do the rest is the key to getting faster as a boxer and this seems to be the case with damn near everything else. I started my first blog in July of 2013. Back then it would have taken me 3 weeks to put out an edited 1,000 words. Now I can put out 500-2,500 words in a couple hours. 10 years to get there.
The challenge is showing up to do the work on a consistent basis. The river doesn’t have emotions, doesn’t get tired of being a river, doesn’t lose energy because the rocks don’t understand why it flows everyday… The river simply does its work. I want to become more like the river so I can see Grand Canyon Outcomes in my life.
