Do The Work!

Even though I don’t work as a personal trainer anymore, I still get inquiries about my ‘secrets to fitness success’.  One question that I’ve gotten at least 50 times in the last 6-7 years is, “Travis, how do I get my first pull up?”

Assuming they have healthy shoulders, I give them the secret:

“Find some of those big exercise bands.  Use the band to help you through the pull up.  You want to find the right band or bands that help you do 5-10 repetitions straight, for 3-5 sets.   Do this 1-3 times per week.  Decrease the size of the band(s) as you get stronger and, eventually, you’ll get it.”

The Person seeking Advice – “How long will it take?”

My response with a big friendly smile on my face – “Three Years.”

In reality, IF THEY ARE CONSISTENT, probably not 3 years.  But, it will take as long as it takes, based on follow through.  I say three years because I want them to understand that the secret to success is a combination of patience, consistency, and determination.  Lack of patience, Lack of consistency, and Lack of determination are the reasons why 99% of the people who ever ask me about achieving any significant goal, have not reached it.

Out of maybe 50-60 people who have asked me this question, male and female, younger and older, I’ve seen one person follow through.  She was in her thirties and a mother of three.  In less than a year she went from 0 pull ups to 10 straight.  I’ve written about this before and I will again.  It’s one of the best examples of what happens when you just follow the simple and obvious plan.  It’s not sexy, but it’s massively effective.

When I worked as a fitness coach I found that people wanted me to entertain them and motivate them more than anything.  You want to be entertained?  Go to the movies.  You want to hit your target? Get over yourself and execute.

You want something, then stop making excuses and wasting time looking for some magic answer that you know doesn’t exist.  Get on with it… Do The Work!
